In the composition of a city, fire, abandonment, demolition, and development create a pattern of spaces left between those inhabited. Empty lots, deserted buildings, leftover niches and dead end alleys are spaces that may seem wasted and yet contribute tremendously to our experience of the city. These are the places that inspire daydreams and also hold the most potential for increasing the strength of the urban fabric.
Architalx invites submissions for conceptual interventions that take either the intangible, the practical (or both) into consideration. The intent of this exercise is to explore contrast and range of possibility: to draw attention to how many different typologies a particular site could house. We hope to spark a polemical dialog about the role of “in between” spaces in the life of a city.
Six sites on the Portland peninsula have been chosen:
- •Empty lot at 627 Congress Street (next to Geno’s)
- •Building shell at 49 India St. (behind Tackle Shop)
- •Free St. Parking lot (between Brown St. and Center St.)
- •Glass box at 500 Congress Street (corner of Brown St.)
- •Alley and narrow space at 1 Congress Sq. (between Channel 6 building and Schwartz building)
- •Franklin Arterial median strip (from 295 to Commercial St.)
This is not an adjudicated competition, an exhibit including all submissions will be held at Aucocisco Gallery during the month of April, 2007.
Submissions in the form of 2 or 3d representation can be - but are not limited to-drawing, models and text. Mount your submission on a 20”X20” board, with a final dimension no deeper than 4”.
