Merrill Elam is an acclaimed American architect and educator based in Atlanta, Georgia. As a principal of Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, she has played a pivotal role in shaping contemporary architecture through a multidisciplinary approach that spans buildings, interiors, planning, graphics, exhibition design, and research.

Elam earned her Bachelor of Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1971, followed by a Master of Business Administration from the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University in 1982. Before co-founding her own practice, she spent 12 years as an architect and senior associate at Heery & Heery Architects & Engineers. In 1984, she co-established Scogin Elam and Bray Architects, which later evolved into Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects in 2000.

A licensed architect in 13 states and a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Elam is NCARB certified and has significantly contributed to architectural education. She has held visiting professorships at leading institutions including Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Toronto, the University of Virginia, Ohio State University, Syracuse University, and the University of Texas at Austin. She has also served as president of the Georgia State Board of Architects and was instrumental in founding the Architecture Society of Atlanta, where she served as president.

Her distinguished career includes numerous high-profile projects, such as the Gates Center for Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, the Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture at Ohio State University, and the Lulu Chow Wang Campus Center at Wellesley College. Her firm’s work has been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Architecture, the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, and the Women in Architecture Design Leader Award from Architectural Record. In 2008, she was named an International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

With a career spanning decades, Merrill Elam continues to shape the architectural landscape through both practice and education, leaving a lasting impact on the field.
