From Granite to Innovation: Designing the Roux Institute's Vision for Maine's Future
From Granite to Innovation: Designing the Roux Institute's Vision for Maine's Future
This lecture presents the design of the Alfond Center, the 245,000-square-foot flagship academic building of the Roux Institute at Northeastern University in Portland, Maine. Designed by CambridgeSeven, the project offers a unique opportunity to unite bold architectural vision with regional identity and sustainable innovation.
Drawing inspiration from Maine's historic Bailey Island Bridge, a remarkable engineering accomplishment designed with interlocking Yarmouth granite cribbing, the new Alfond Center reflects key physical and material characteristics of the bridge and the building's sweeping curvilinear form translates Portland’s industrial character — granite, copper, wood, and glass — into a dynamic contemporary academic environment. At its heart, "The Portal" serves as a dramatic gathering space bridging campus life with the waterfront of Back Cove.
The lecture also examines the project's ambitious sustainability agenda, developed collaboratively with Northeastern University and the City of Portland. Key initiatives include geothermal heating and cooling, photovoltaic panels, mass timber construction using locally harvested wood, triple-glazed curtainwall systems optimized through solar radiation analysis, and shoreline restoration addressing sea level rise.
The Alfond Center stands as a compelling case study in architecture as a catalyst for academic excellence and regional transformation.

Timothy Mansfield, AIA, NCARB – President | CEO
Timothy Mansfield is an architect recognized internationally for his leadership and design vision as President and CEO at CambridgeSeven, a 50-person Cambridge, Massachusetts-based architecture and exhibit design firm. Commanding excellent design and communication skills, Timothy spearheads CambridgeSeven's most significant architectural and exhibit projects, bringing a bold, signature design aesthetic that has become a hallmark of the firm's most celebrated work.

Timothy's portfolio spans some of the most compelling institutional and cultural projects of the past two decades. His work across higher education, aquariums, and science and sports heritage museums has produced landmark results — from the dramatic Roux Institute at Northeastern University in Portland, ME, and the groundbreaking National Aquarium of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh, to the immersive San Francisco 49ers Museum in Santa Clara, CA, and the innovative Complex Animal Research Facility for Jackson Laboratories in Bar Harbor, ME. His deep relationship with Bowdoin College has yielded several transformative campus buildings including the Roux Environmental Center, the Buck Center for Health and Wellness, and the Edwards Arts Center. Today, Timothy leads two of the firm's most ambitious endeavors — the new Submarine Science Center in Charleston, SC, and the dynamic Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame Experience at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, FL.

Born in Boston, Timothy's passion for the built environment took shape at Wesleyan University, where he earned a BA in English and Art with a concentration in Architectural History, Theory, and Criticism. Driven by a commitment to pursue architecture as a profession, he spent three years gaining hands-on field experience before enrolling at MIT's School of Architecture and Planning. At MIT, Timothy distinguished himself as one of only three American architecture students selected to participate in INDESEM — the prestigious international design seminar organized by the Technical University of Delft and Herman Hertzberger — where he studied under luminaries including Mario Botta, Jean Nouvel, and Rem Koolhaas. He earned his Master of Architecture in 1990 and was honored with the Chandler Prize for Design Excellence.
