A visionary at the vanguard of the structural engineering profession, Bill, as he was affectionately known, was also a licensed architect who held positions in both engineering at MIT and architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Through this perspective, he worked to connect these two worlds of form and function to bring them together in wonderful ways. Further, the collaborative relationships Bill developed with architects became the basis of his professional firm and the catalyst for his most dramatic work in the field of structural engineering.

At his essence, Bill was an educator with a passion for structures shaped by the fundamental principles of engineering. Although he worked throughout his career to achieve new heights in his professional practice, he always made time to educate and mentor the next generation of design professionals. Recently, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine published a Memorial Tribute to Bill in recognition of his outstanding contributions as both a practicing engineer and an educator.
